GOLDEN RULES
ABOUT PURCHASING A KITTEN
Always go to a
reputable breeder to purchase your kitten. A kitten should not be sold without
its Pedigree, a Vaccination Certificate and a registration Document to prove it
has been registered as a pedigree kitten.
The kitten should
have bright eyes and a dry nose with no signs of discharge. The inside of the
ears should be clean with no brown or black discharge as this could mean the
kitten has ear mites. There should be no sign of fleas: little black gritty
specks in the coat either round the neck or on the back near the tail are a sign
of flea dirt. The test is to moisten any specks after putting them on paper if
these specks turn red this if a sure sign of a flea infestation.
Always ask to see
the mother of the kitten. She may look a little thin especially if she has
reared a number of kittens in the litter but unless there are very exceptional
circumstances she should be available for inspection.
A healthy well
humanized kitten will accept an invitation to play after a short introduction.
Don't be tempted
to buy a kitten that is being sold on the cheap or without its vaccinations or
very young. You will probably be buying huge vet bills
UK rules:
Governing Council for the Cat Fancy say kittens should not be sold until
they have received a full course of vaccinations and they should be at
least 13 weeks old.
FIFe
information:
Kittens must not go to a new owner
(home) before they are 12 weeks old and have been fully vaccinated against
Panleucopaenia and "cat flu", unless otherwise advised by a
veterinarian.
(Other countries
may have other rules and if so they will be added in due course.)
